Cheddar Gorge, Somerset

This limestone gorge near the village of Cheddar, Somerset is the site of the Cheddar show caves where the oldest remains of a human where found which dated back some 9,000 BC. It is a site of outstanding natural landscape and rock formations and has been classified as part of a Site of Special Interest.

It is often considered by many to be the greatest natural wonder in Britain and regularly attracts over 500,000 visitors each year. Visits to this site are excellent for school groups across several disciplines. The Cheddar Gorge visitor centre offers guided tours, special talks, demonstrations for primary, secondary and tertiary education.

Day 1

Morning: Departure from school and travel to Cheddar Gorge, Somerset.

Afternoon: Arrival in Somerset in the afternoon and learn about the formation of the gorge, the caves and the physical processes which took place over the millions of years.

Evening: Departure from Cheddar Gorge area and travel to accommodation nearby. Check-in and free-time.

Day2

Morning: After breakfast, to Gough’s Cave for a guided tour to see one of the most spectacular show caves in all of Britain. Imagine how this cave was like when it was occupied in the Stone Age and rediscovered in Victorian times.

Afternoon: Cliff top walk. See how this area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its geological composition and grasslands. Also, see many protected species of wildlife such as bats, dormice, and great chested newts.

Evening: Early evening departure from Somerset and travel back to school. End of tour.
