Cologne & Brussels
As one of Germany’s largest cities, Cologne has been growing in popularity as a location for student tours. It has more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries as well as hosts a number of trade shows throughout the year. Besides this, Cologne Cathedral is one of the most impressive Roman Catholic churches in the world and is Germany’s most visited landmark. Teachers of many disciplines are sure to keep their students engaged with a visit to this city.
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is home to the headquarters of both the European Union as well as NATO and has been considered the heartland of Europe. The Grand Place or central square contains Brussels Town Hall, King’s House along with other fine examples of Belgium architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. School tours to Brussels can fit a variety of subject areas and is just a short distance away.
Example itinerary
Day 1 | Evening: Departure from your school and overnight travel to Cologne by coach. |
Day 2 | Morning: Arrival outside of Cologne for breakfast stop before arriving near Cologne Cathedral for start of walking tour. Afternoon: Visit one of the many museums in Cologne or spend the day enjoying the many sights of the city with your school group. Evening: Check-into hotel for overnight stay. |
Day 3 | Morning: After breakfast, travel to Brussels and start by seeing the Atomium followed by walking tour of Brussels. Afternoon: Spend your leisure time visiting the sights of Brussels including the Grand Place, Manneken Pis, and more. Also, see the Atomium before leaving the city. Evening: Travel to Calais for channel crossing back to UK and return to school. |
Sights & places of interest in Cologne & Brussels
This Roman Catholic Church is the seat of the Archbishop of Cologne. Its Gothic architecture and its significance to German Catholicism attract millions of tourists each year. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its fascinating story of construction, which lasted more than 600 years, shows the detail of work in every piece of stone laid.
This bridge which crosses the Rhine River is one of Cologne’s most familiar landmarks and the most used railway bridge in Germany. It was originally built in 1911 and was destroyed and demolished during World War II and later rebuilt.
This museum houses a collection of modern art and includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism. It has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe with around 900 works by the artist and features many works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Today, the museum also houses the most comprehensive collection of early Russian avant-garde artworks outside of Russia.
This museum is devoted to Christian religious art, mainly medieval, but some parts of the collection extends into textiles and prints. The museum occupies the large Romanesque church of St. Cäcilien since 1956. Highlights if the collection include a Romanesque tympanum from St. Cecilia’s itself, a 11th century Cross of St. George’s, and work from Rainer of Huy.
This decorative arts museum of Cologne includes jewellery, porcelain, furniture, weaponry and architectural exhibits. Its large collections of over 100,000 items of European applied art from the 10th century to the present make it one of the largest in Europe. It is particulary famous for its collection of modern design and is spread over two floors.
The central square of Brussels or also known as GroteMarkt is surrounded by magnificent buildings and the city’s Town Hall. It is the most memorable landmark and most popular tourist destination in Brussels. This square was voted the most beautiful square in Europe in 2010.
This easily recognisable building which was constructed in 1958 for the World’s Fair stands 102 meters tall above Brussels. Its shape forms the shape of an iron crystal and the top sphere offers panoramic view of Brussels.
This tiny 24 inch bronze fountain sculpture depicting a naked little boy urinating into the fountain’s basin. Originally put in place in 1618 or 1619 it quickly became the most famous landmark in Brussels. It is located a few hundred metres away from the Grand Place.
This museum consists of Ancient and Modern art and holds some twenty thousand paintings, sculptures and drawings. It’s rich collection is from the 15th century to today. Inside you will find works by Bosch, Bruegel, Ruben Delveaux and Magritte and more.
Located in an art nouveau style museum designed by Victor Horta, this museum shows the stages of putting together a comic strip as well as wonderful displays of cartoon art from artists around the world and Belgium’s most famous cartoonist.
This Roman Catholic church at the Treurenberg Hill in Brussels. This church is often used in ceremonies of national interest such as royal marriages and state funerals.
Located in the building of the Royal Museum for Fine Arts houses the world’s largest collection of René Magritte’s works. It covers all periods from his life and displays his most important masterpieces.
